22 Goals Define Mbappe's Unprecedented Ballon d'Or Campaign
Kylian Mbappe seeks individual recognition for his record-breaking performance despite a season devoid of major team trophies.

Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London as a contender who has shattered historical scoring records, even as he lacks the silverware typically associated with the award. The prize, which confers no cash but significantly elevates a player's market value and prestige, will be decided based on a blend of individual brilliance and team success. Mbappe is not the favorite among bookmakers, nor was he the top scorer in every single competition last season, yet he has constructed a compelling case for the honor based on unprecedented statistical achievements.
The 2025-26 season, which forms the basis for this year's evaluation, concluded without Mbappe lifting a trophy at either the club or international level. He relies instead on a collection of individual milestones that he believes justify the award. His most significant accomplishment came during the 2026 World Cup in North America, where he claimed the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. In doing so, he established himself as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, tallying 22 goals in 22 matches. This places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who is second with 21 goals, and former Germany international Miroslav Klose, who is third with 16.
Mbappe emphasized the magnitude of this feat in recent comments, noting that overtaking the sport's greatest legends in the most important tournament is a defining achievement. When asked directly who he would vote for, the French forward answered simply, "Myself." His club performance mirrored this dominance, as he finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and also led the Champions League scoring charts with 15 goals. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward expressed confidence in his candidacy, stating that being the top scorer in the biggest competitions makes for a strong year.
However, the central weakness in his bid is the absence of team trophies. Real Madrid experienced a turbulent campaign under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, finishing second in La Liga and falling to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This result extended the club's trophyless streak to a second straight season. On the international stage, France finished fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff. This contrasts sharply with rival contenders such as Lamine Yamal, who won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, and Harry Kane, who collected three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe appears undeterred by the lack of hardware, arguing that the award recognizes a specific player rather than a team. Speaking to the radio station RFI, he noted that individual performance and eye-catching moments are what typically define such honors. He has also received support from his club manager, Jose Mourinho, who highlighted that the player who made history this summer is not from Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team. Mourinho's endorsement underscores the perception that Mbappe's individual output was exceptional regardless of his team's final standings.
Historical precedent suggests the task is difficult, as every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade has lifted at least one major trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title, while Rodri was named the winner two years ago after winning Euro 2024 and the Premier League. The only recent exception is Cristiano Ronaldo, who won his second Ballon d'Or in 2013 without a major team trophy. That year, Real Madrid finished as league runners-up, and Portugal failed to advance past the 2012 World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season, setting a high bar for individual scoring.
This 2013 precedent offers a sliver of hope for Mbappe, who has been nominated nine times and finished third in 2023. Many observers believe his moment may finally be arriving, driven by a season where his individual statistics reached historic levels. The ceremony in London will determine whether the voters prioritize the record-breaking numbers of a player without a trophy or the collective success of his rivals.
