Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., returned to public view in Minnesota on Friday after spending nearly two weeks away from the spotlight. Her absence followed a criminal investigation that led federal agents to search her Washington, D.C., residence on Oct. 12, 2026. She marked her return by posting a calm video of herself and her husband, Tim Mynett, walking on a dock over a lake with fall foliage in the background.
Omar, who is running for reelection, captioned the X post with the phrase, "Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes." The clip showed the couple smiling, chatting, and posing for the camera while holding coffee. It concluded with a montage of images from their walk. While the visual tone was peaceful, the audio featured a loud Somali hip-hop song with aggressive lyrics.
The track, titled "Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya," is by artist Ilkacase Qays, whose real name is Muse Abdikadir. A translation of the Somali lyrics states, "Let me reveal who I really am. No enemy dares threaten me, wherever I step, they scatter." The song also includes lines such as, "If the just one had felt anger on my behalf, would he not have crushed the enemy underfoot?" Cultural analysts describe the piece as a form of Somali lyrical poetry centered on pride, bravery, and personal dignity.
On Friday, Omar cast an early ballot in Minneapolis alongside state Attorney General Keith Ellison. Media members closely followed the pair as they voted. The two then appeared at the Karmel Mall of Somalia in Minneapolis, where they ate lunch with members of the Somali community and posed for photographs. Omar later restricted who could respond directly to her social media post. The only public comment came from former House member Cori Bush, who wrote, "We love this."
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations conducted the raid on Omar's home as part of a probe into potential fraud related to immigration paperwork filled out by her or her father during her naturalization process. During the search, agents confiscated Omar's passport and cellphone. Her sister, Sahra Noor, has been interviewed by investigators, and federal agents have also obtained Omar's DNA.
Tom Homan, the border czar, stated last week that if fraud is proven, Omar could be denaturalized. The investigation is being led by HSI, the main investigatory agency for the Department of Homeland Security. It is currently unclear when the lakeside video was filmed, though it was shared at the end of last week.
