Laredo Mayoral Contenders Detail 100-Day Plans Amid 14,000 Early Votes

Webb County residents cast nearly 14,000 early ballots by October 22 for the Laredo mayoral race. Five candidates now compete for the top position in a field that includes the current mayor, a sitting council member, a former council member, a local businessman, and a new entrant. Four of the five contenders have publicly detailed their priorities for the first 100 days in office.

Dr. Victor Trevino, the incumbent mayor, prioritizes public health with a focus on youth. He stated that ensuring young people have access to medical services is essential for the city's future. Trevino argued that a healthy pediatric and adolescent population will shape the next generation of residents.

District 8 Councilwoman Alyssa Cigarroa plans to focus on unity among council members. She intends to assess the specific needs of every district before establishing a shared vision. Cigarroa explained that her administration would work backwards from that collective goal to set policy.

J.D. Gonzalez, a customs broker, targets business growth and water infrastructure. He wants to review the city's water master plan and fix pressure and flow issues. Gonzalez also aims to speed up the permitting process to maintain the city's current economic momentum.

Alfonso "Poncho" Casso, a former council member, identifies water as his primary concern. He proposes saving the river and finding alternative sources. For immediate relief, Casso suggests drilling on public-school land so revenue returns to students. His long-term strategy involves creating a "Gulf water triangle."

Jorge Garza, the fifth candidate on the ballot, did not reply to inquiries from KGNS for comment.
