Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, setting a release date for December 3. The six-part limited series stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy.
The production marks a major shift in casting and format for the classic text. Olivia Colman plays Mrs. Bennet, while Rufus Sewell portrays Mr. Bennet. The remaining Bennet sisters are played by Freya Mavor as Jane, Hopey Parish as Mary, Hollie Avery as Kitty, and Rhea Norwood as Lydia.
Dolly Alderton, who wrote and executive produced the series, admitted to feeling initial pressure upon receiving the pitch. "I absolutely cannot do this. This is everyone's favorite book. It's too much responsibility," Alderton told Netflix's Tudum. She stated she eventually viewed the project as an honor after setting aside her concerns about potential errors.
Alderton emphasized that the script remains faithful to Austen's original emotions. "Pride and Prejudice is such a timeless story because of the emotions in the book; they are as pertinent now as they were in 1812," she added. The series is directed by Euros Lyn, known for his work on Heartstopper.
The project is a production of Lookout Point, with Laura Lankester, Will Johnston, and Louise Mutter serving as executive producers alongside Alderton, Lyn, and Corrin. Lisa Osborne is credited as producer. The trailer, released Wednesday, features Elizabeth telling her sister Jane, "One day Jane, I shall be either a governance and a spinster or a wife and a mother."
