A new elementary school in Texas will carry the name of a retired custodian who spent nearly four decades working for the district, going well beyond her official duties to support students.

The Aubrey independent school district (AISD) moved to name its new elementary school No 5 after Marilyn Hampton, who worked for the district for 39 years before retiring in 2022. The announcement came at a governing board meeting on 21 October, which was recorded on video. The moment moved Hampton to tears and later spread widely among online communities that share uplifting news.

Officials said Hampton's work extended far beyond cleaning and maintenance. She helped students with their classwork, bought school supplies and delivered them to children who needed them, and worked the ticket booth at football games. According to district superintendent Shannon Saylor, thousands of students, teachers and staff members found inspiration in her dedication.

The district invited Hampton to the October meeting by telling her she would speak about a particular school-related matter. Instead, Saylor asked her to unroll a red carpet and read the navy blue lettering printed on it. The words said: "Marilyn Hampton Elementary School."

Saylor said Hampton never held the formal title of educator, but "she was in every meaningful sense a teacher and educator at heart." The school is under construction and is scheduled to open in August.

Hampton responded with visible emotion. "Y'all are too good," she said, covering her mouth. "I wasn't expecting this. Thank y'all. I love all of y'all, always miss y'all." After composing herself, she looked at a monitor showing an AI rendering of the building with a sign bearing her name and joked, "They better keep it clean." The remark drew loud laughter from the room.

In an interview with the Dallas-Fort Worth outlet WFAA, Hampton said, "I still can't believe it. I haven't stopped crying." She wore a new Marilyn Hampton elementary school T-shirt for the conversation.

Hampton also reflected on her own path. She was the only one of her eight siblings to graduate from high school, and she said she once considered herself a failure for not attending college. Over time, she said, she became "very happy with the way things turned out." She added that she told herself, "You know, Marilyn? God put you where you are supposed to be."

School buildings in the United States are often named for presidents, historical figures and civil rights leaders. Hampton's name will soon join them on a campus in Aubrey.
