Two thousand eight hundred soldiers from ten European nations will convene in southeastern Poland starting November 9 to conduct the first operational rehearsal of the Multinational Force Ukraine. The exercise, designated Koalicja, runs through November 22 and serves as the initial practical test of a military structure built to support Kyiv after a ceasefire is established.

London and Paris confirmed the deployment details on Tuesday. The force, established in 2025 with an operational headquarters in Paris, is led jointly by France and the United Kingdom. It operates independently of NATO and involves minimal U.S. participation. The primary objective is to bolster Ukrainian security and facilitate economic recovery in the Black Sea region without assuming an offensive combat role.

France will contribute the largest contingent of 1,100 troops, followed by the United Kingdom with 300 soldiers. Participating nations also include Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. Operations will center on the town of Nowa Deba, located approximately 100 kilometers west of the Ukrainian border. A separate maritime simulation led by Turkey will run from Istanbul to prepare for mine-clearing activities in the Black Sea, though Turkish troops will not join the land exercises in Poland.

The drill focuses on logistics, coordination, and the ability to integrate diverse military components into a single unit. General Armel Dirou of France and Lieutenant General Tom Bateman of Britain will co-lead the event. They aim to identify and resolve potential logistical and cultural friction points between the participating militaries. The French defense ministry stated that the exercise tests the speed and efficiency of deploying forces on land, sea, and air.

Only light equipment, such as drones, will be deployed for anti-drone and self-defense training. Heavy weaponry, including tanks, will remain in reserve. Bateman clarified that the force is not a peacekeeping or ceasefire monitoring mission. He described its purpose as providing reassurance and supporting the regeneration of Ukraine's armed forces to strengthen their deterrence capabilities against future aggression.

Moscow is expected to monitor the proceedings closely, even as it shows limited interest in a peace settlement. The conflict has now persisted longer than World War I, approaching its five-year mark without a decisive breakthrough. Dirou emphasized that the maneuver is not a display of muscle, but a concrete demonstration of readiness. The force is intended to be operational once hostilities cease, not to influence the current battlefield dynamics.
