Lewis Uvwo, the highest-ranked center in the 2027 recruiting class, committed to Providence on Wednesday. The five-star big man announced his decision on CBS Sports HQ, selecting the Friars over offers from Baylor, Kentucky, and Cal.
Uvwo attends Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He visited all four schools during the recruiting process. His final trip to Providence took place last month. This visit followed his earlier official trips to Kentucky, Cal, and Baylor. Uvwo is ranked No. 7 overall in the 2027 cycle by 247Sports. The service labels him the best big man in his class.
The commitment marks a major milestone for the Friars program. Uvwo is only the third five-star recruit to sign with Providence in the 247Sports era. He joins Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn, both of whom committed in 2012, as one of the highest-ranked players in school history.
Bryan Hodgson enters his first season as head coach with this addition. In a statement to 247Sports, Uvwo cited the staff and culture as key factors. "I felt like they genuinely believed in me, not just as a basketball player but as a person," he said. He described the program as having a strong basketball history with room to create more and reach new heights.
Uvwo also praised Hodgson's leadership. "Coach Hodgson separated himself through his craft and the fact that he has always been a winner," Uvwo said. He added that he believes in what Hodgson is building and the role the coach sees for him.
247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finklestein describes Uvwo as an elite defensive prospect. The 6-foot-10 player weighs a cut 225 pounds and possesses a nearly 7-foot-6 wingspan. Finklestein notes that Uvwo runs, jumps, and changes direction with ease. He also has quick reactions for his size, allowing him to flip his hips or bounce back up for secondary jumps.
Finklestein expects Uvwo to add muscle without losing his explosiveness. He characterizes the player as an energy-giver with a high motor who brings a rare sense of joy to the court. Providence, which sits in Tier 4 of the budget ranking with $12.1 million to $15 million, shares that tier with Georgetown, Creighton, Villanova, Marquette, UCLA, Ohio State, Baylor, and Alabama.
