Adam Driver will portray Dr. Nathaniel Essex, known as Mister Sinister, in the upcoming X-Men reboot. The actor confirmed the role during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, marking his first lead performance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Driver stated that he was a long-time fan of the X-Men franchise but had previously declined multiple Marvel offers. He described the decision as a combination of timing and creative alignment. "It was really 'X-Men,' Jake Schreier, who's the director, his idea for it, and that it's Kevin Feige," Driver said. "It all kind of came together. The script is really cool."
The actor acknowledged the pressure that comes with high-profile franchise work. He noted that large audiences mean high visibility for any missteps. "A lot of people are going to watch it, and if it's bad, you know, a lot of people will see you being bad. Plus, I don't want to mess it up," Driver explained.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige discussed the history of their negotiations on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Feige said that offering Driver roles has become a recurring pattern. "It's no secret we'd like to [work with Adam]," Feige said. "But it's a tradition to Zoom with him and then he passes. That's a long-lived tradition. He couldn't be more cordial. He is usually upfront about how he is feeling."
In the film, Driver's character is a superintelligent, shape-shifting telepath. He serves as the primary antagonist to a cast that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Asa Germann as Angel.
Driver joined the project after years of turning down similar roles. The new film represents a shift from his previous pattern of passing on Marvel offerings, driven by his approval of the director's vision and the specific script.
