Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained an unspecified number of individuals in Rio Rancho on the morning of Nov. 5, according to the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque.
Consul Patricia Sanchez confirmed the activity in the Los Diamantes neighborhood, where residential construction is currently underway. Social media posts from the morning showed masked agents making arrests, but Sanchez stated the Consulate could not yet provide a specific headcount of Mexican nationals taken into custody.
Sanchez explained that ICE is required to notify the Consulate when it detains Mexican citizens. Upon receiving that notice, Consulate staff travel to the ICE facility to interview the detainees and verify that their legal rights are protected. The office also contacts the families of those detained to maintain lines of communication.
The Consulate’s jurisdiction covers only Mexican nationals. Sanchez noted that other nationalities fall outside the office’s scope of responsibility. Detainees are typically processed in the community where they are apprehended before being transferred to the ICE office in El Paso, Texas. Because of this workflow, Consulate staff often do not interview the individuals until they arrive in Texas, closer to the border.
Rio Rancho Police Capt. Nick Army, who serves as the department’s public information officer, stated that the RRPD was never notified of the ICE operation. He confirmed the local police had no involvement in the arrests.
Sanchez said the Consulate continues to follow up with the families of those detained to ensure communication is not broken during the process.
