SmartAsset released a national analysis on November 1, 2026, finding that a single adult requires a minimum annual pre-tax income of $80,000 to live comfortably in all 50 states. The study indicates that the financial bar for a comfortable lifestyle has risen sharply across the country. In nearly half of the states, that required income now exceeds $100,000.

The analysis relied on data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator, which was last updated in February 2026. Researchers applied the 50/30/20 budgeting rule to these base figures. Under this framework, 50% of income covers necessities such as housing and utilities, 30% funds discretionary spending, and 20% is allocated for savings and retirement. The resulting figures represent the total annual earnings needed to meet these targets.

For households with two working adults and two children, the costs are higher. The data shows that a family of four needs at least $200,000 in annual income to live comfortably in 40 states. Massachusetts stands out as the most expensive location for such families, requiring an income of $329,555. Mississippi is the most affordable state for this demographic, where the threshold is $187,533.

Hawai‘i presents the steepest financial burden for individuals living alone. A single adult in that state needs $129,002 per year to maintain a comfortable standard of living. West Virginia is the most affordable option for single adults, with a requirement of only $81,245. These figures represent the pre-tax amounts needed to cover basic needs and maintain savings.

Montana experienced the largest year-over-year increase in the income needed for comfort. The threshold for a single adult there rose 8.6% compared to 2025. New York followed with an 8.4% increase, pushing the required income to $124,342. Maine and California also saw sharp climbs, with increases of 6.5% and 6.1% respectively.

Not every state saw costs rise. Six states reported a decline in the income needed to live comfortably since 2025. Tennessee recorded the largest drop, with the required income for a single adult falling 1.7% to $89,898. Maryland followed with a 0.9% decrease to $107,910. Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas also saw modest reductions in their respective thresholds.

The top five states by year-over-year cost increase for single adults are Montana, New York, Maine, California, and Massachusetts. In Massachusetts, the required income for a single person is $127,213, up 5.9% from the previous year. These numbers reflect the rising pressure on household budgets from housing, groceries, and transportation.

SmartAsset noted that the source data providers are not affiliated with the study. The organization used the 2026 data to calculate current estimates and compared them with 2025 figures to determine the rate of change. The study defines a comfortable lifestyle as one where a worker can cover basic needs while still saving for the future and enjoying discretionary purchases.
