Bernalillo County opened its first DC fast-charging station in downtown Albuquerque on November 6, 2026. The facility is located at the Mid-Region Council of Governments building on 809 Copper Ave. NW.
The station features a Level III charger capable of delivering 200 kilowatts of power. This capacity allows most electric vehicles to reach a full charge in approximately 30 minutes. The installation includes built-in space for a second charging port to be added later.
Funding for the project came from multiple sources. The New Mexico Department of Transportation provided a $500,000 grant, approved by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the state legislature. Bernalillo County contributed local matching funds, and PNM issued a $50,000 rebate to support the installation.
The site is situated within walking distance of several downtown destinations. Nearby amenities include apartments, restaurants, retail shops, a hotel, a brewery, and the Downtown Growers Market. County Manager Cindy Chavez stated that expanding the network in this area helps residents and visitors choose cleaner transportation while supporting local businesses.
This addition is part of the county’s ongoing investment in electric vehicle infrastructure. Bernalillo County currently operates a network of 24 charging ports. Officials plan to add 14 more ports at four other county facilities in the coming years.
