For Ryleigh Schoonover, the transition from high school to college will not involve a long plane ride or a new time zone. She will play her first game for Fresno State at the Save Mart Center, the same facility where she has spent her teenage years competing for the Clovis West Golden Eagles. Her season opener against UC Merced is less than two weeks away, marking the start of her collegiate career just blocks from where she grew up.

Schoonover is joining a Bulldogs roster that is aiming for a Pac-12 title. Her arrival adds depth to a freshman class that Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy believes is already strong. McCarthy described Schoonover as the best player in the local area for her class of 2026. He noted that she proved his assessment immediately upon joining the team.

Her decision to stay in the Central Valley was driven by a sense of identity. Schoonover said that wearing the valley "V" on her jersey holds a specific meaning that outsiders often miss. She credited her former high school coach, Craig Campbell, for instilling a standard of excellence that has prepared her for the demands of the college game. Schoonover observed that in both environments, the expectation is that everything becomes the standard.

Clovis West has established a reputation for sustained dominance. The Golden Eagles have won consecutive Central Section championships for 14 years, a streak that has shaped the program's culture. Campbell, who has coached the team through that era, said the goal is to remain competitive every season. He explained that while they may not win every title, they intend to be knocking on the door annually.

Campbell believes Schoonover's time in a winning program has made her ready for the next level. He stated that her background in a team that consistently won has set the right expectations for her college performance. He added that he is excited for McCarthy and his staff because Schoonover is only beginning to show her full potential.

Schoonover is now part of a Bulldogs team that will begin its season in under two weeks. The first game will take place at the Save Mart Center, a venue familiar to her. She is preparing to step onto that floor as a Fresno State player, carrying with her the habits and standards formed during her time at Clovis West.
