The Federal Bureau of Investigation took a 17-year-old from McKinney into custody after investigators accused the teen of plotting to kill Texas Congressman Keith Self. The arrest was confirmed to the media by officials on the lawmaker’s campaign team. Self, who is a Republican, is currently seeking a third term in office to represent Texas’ third congressional district. The incident has raised questions about security protocols for elected officials during active election cycles.
The timeline of the event began in early October. Campaign staff stated that the FBI executed the arrest on October 5. The following day, on October 6, the congressional team learned of the detention through the U.S. Capitol Police. Investigators indicated that the suspect had been under federal monitoring and was believed to be radicalized. Officials told the campaign that the teen was also planning a broader terrorist attack on behalf of the Islamic State group.
The primary target for the alleged attack was a specific fundraising event. The plan involved hitting Self at a chili cook-off benefit for veterans. This gathering was scheduled for October 17 and featured former Dallas Cowboys players alongside other prominent guests. The event was a high-profile occasion that drew significant attention from within the district and beyond.
Rep. Self said his response was shaped by his background in the military. He noted that his experience in combat zones allowed him to remain composed when the news broke. He explained that he focused on determining if the suspect was a lone wolf or part of a larger cell. His wife, who has been a military spouse for 25 years, also understood the gravity of the situation. She supported his decision to remain vigilant without becoming overly distressed by the news.
The campaign team adjusted its security posture immediately after learning of the arrest. They increased their situational awareness and profile during the ongoing early voting period. Self stated that while he had received threats in the past, this was the first time an accusation had reached the level of a formal arrest. He acknowledged the seriousness of the plot and the potential for it to become a major incident had the plan succeeded.
Despite the looming threat, Self attended the chili cook-off as scheduled. He participated in the judging process, evaluating 19 different varieties of chili and three pots of beans. He reported that the event proceeded smoothly and that nothing happened to disrupt the day. The presence of former professional athletes and other notable attendees did not seem to alter the course of the evening.
The congressman has continued his campaign activities without interruption. He has been out in the field greeting voters and meeting with constituents every day. He stated that the incident would not deter him from his efforts to inform the American public about what he sees as a specific political ideology. His team remains committed to their schedule and plans to keep working through the election period.
The plot coincides with Self’s recent legislative focus on religious law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution that denounces Sharia law and opposes its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This stance has been a central part of his campaign messaging in the current midterm cycle.
Local politics in the district have also been active regarding religious institutions. The McKinney City Council unanimously approved a site plan for the expansion of a local mosque in August. That vote followed several hours of heated public comment. In the weeks following the approval, an effort began to recall several city council members. The teen’s identity has not been made public as the federal investigation continues.
Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the upcoming election, also reacted to the news. He condemned the alleged assassination plot in a post on social media. The FBI’s Dallas office has been contacted for additional details regarding the case. As of now, they have not provided further information to the public. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are monitoring the situation closely.
