Real Madrid will face Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday in a match that could reduce the league gap to three points. Barcelona currently leads the Spanish championship by six points. A victory for the home side would extend that advantage to nine points.
The visitors arrive in good form, having won four consecutive matches. A win in Barcelona would mark a turnaround for a squad that has lost six of the last seven meetings against their rivals. By contrast, Barcelona's momentum was disrupted this week. The Spanish champions suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday, losing 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
José Mourinho will stand in front of his old team as Real Madrid's manager. The 63-year-old coach has played in 27 matches against Barcelona and managed the Merengues in 17 Clásicos. Florentino Pérez first hired Mourinho in 2010 to compete with Pep Guardiola's side. Pérez hopes this second stint will bring the league title back to the Bernabéu.
Hansi Flick, Barcelona's manager, acknowledged the confidence his opponents carry. "When you’re managing teams on this level for so many years and you always have success, it’s about quality," Flick said. He noted that his team has been together for only about two months, describing the squad as being in an initial phase of development.
Flick stated that the loss in Paris provided specific areas for improvement. "We analysed this game. We did many things really good, but we saw some situations where we have to improve," he said. He viewed the Clásico as an opportunity for the group to grow as a unit against a top-tier opponent.
Both managers described the upcoming fixture as unique. Mourinho said that past form has no influence on the outcome of a Clásico. "Normally, the football world stops to watch it. Hopefully, it’s a great game and we win," he said. The match serves as a direct contest for the league leadership, with the current six-point separation hanging in the balance.
