Residents of a Brighton home on Selkirk Road experienced a violent police intervention on Friday morning when officers shot a man in the stomach. The incident began just after 7 a.m. with a call reporting a man threatening to harm himself. The man was transported to a hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition. He has not yet been identified.

Police Commissioner Michael Cox described the sequence of events at a news conference later that day. Officers arrived at the residence and engaged the man for approximately 20 minutes. He was holding what Cox described as a very large knife and refused to lower it. During the standoff, another individual inside the home was safely removed by officers. None of the police involved suffered serious injuries, though two were taken to a hospital for evaluations. The officer who fired the weapon has been on the force for just over two years.

Cox stated that other officers at the scene carried tasers, but it remains unclear if the officer who shot the man had one available. The commissioner expressed relief that no officer was heavily injured and voiced hope for the suspect's recovery. The Suffolk County District Attorney's office has opened an investigation into the shooting.

The Boston police union issued a statement commending the officers' swift response. The union noted that the situation was incredibly dangerous and highly hostile. They emphasized that the suspect is expected to survive his injuries. The union also advised the public to comply with lawful commands during contentious encounters to ensure safety for all parties involved.

The man remains in the hospital as investigators review the timeline of the 20-minute interaction. The two officers who were evaluated have been released. The specific details of the initial threat and the man's history are part of the ongoing district attorney review. The home on Selkirk Road was secured after the second person was removed safely.
