Denver fans witnessed a complete shift in momentum during the final minute of Sunday’s game, watching their team erase a 24-13 deficit to secure a 28-24 victory. The result places the Broncos in first place in the AFC West, a position that shifts the division’s power dynamics heading into the next stretch of the season.

The Broncos entered the fourth quarter trailing by eleven points but finished the contest with a two-point lead. Quarterback Bo Nix completed 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. His counterpart, Patrick Mahomes, was 30 of 41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns, also without an interception. Despite the statistical output from both signal callers, the Broncos’ execution in the closing seconds proved decisive.

The decisive sequence began after a missed field goal attempt by Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker. The 54-yard kick sailed wide right in steady rain. This miss followed a six-yard sack by Alex Singleton, leaving the Chiefs needing a score to tie the game. Denver used two plays and 35 seconds to take the lead, with rookie running back Jonah Coleman gaining 51 yards and then scoring from the five-yard line.

The Chiefs managed to drive inside the Denver five-yard line with under a minute remaining. Kenneth Walker III gained 32 yards on a reception and 69 yards on the ground, carrying the ball 21 times. Walker’s three-yard run placed the ball at the one-yard line with the Chiefs still in possession. Mahomes threw an incomplete pass on second down, and Walker was stopped on the goal line on third down.

On the final play, Denver linebacker Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes on fourth-and-goal. The tackle preserved the Broncos’ lead and ended the game. This performance marked the first time in Mahomes’ career that he was held without a touchdown pass in consecutive games, although he did score in this contest.

Injuries affected both rosters during the contest. For the Chiefs, defensive lineman Peter Woods left in the first quarter with a neck injury. Cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed and Mansoor Delane were out, altering the secondary’s structure. For the Broncos, cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine exited in the second quarter with an ankle injury, and safety Brandon Jones was ruled out at halftime with a hamstring issue.

The Broncos will travel to the Carolina Panthers next Sunday, while the Chiefs host the New York Jets. Both teams enter the upcoming week with a win, though the Broncos now hold the division lead with a 6-2 record, compared to Kansas City’s 5-2 mark.
