Victor Wembanyama scored 52 points and grabbed 24 rebounds on Wednesday night as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Dallas Mavericks 112-111. The performance also included eight blocked shots, marking a personal best across three statistical categories simultaneously.
The Frenchman’s output broke a record that had stood for over five decades. He became the first player to record at least 50 points, 20 rebounds, and five blocks in a single game since Bob McAdoo did so in 1974. The NBA’s official social media account confirmed the milestone immediately after the final buzzer sounded.
The Spurs entered the game following a volatile start to the 2026-27 season. They lost their first two contests, including a poor opening night performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder that raised early questions about Wembanyama’s trajectory. The team responded by winning six consecutive games, a streak that culminated in the victory over Dallas.
Wembanyama attributed his sudden surge in performance to recovering from a lingering illness. He told the Associated Press that he had not been feeling well for some time. "I've been sick for a while and today I felt like I got my legs back," he said. "So it should be more like this, more often."
Despite the career night, the player noted that his shooting efficiency still needs work. He admitted that his shots were not falling during the game, which forced him into a physically demanding style of play. "That forces me into a style of play that is exhausting," Wembanyama stated. "I can do it. I mean, the proof is here. I can do it, but I can be much better if my shots fall."
The Spurs have relied on Wembanyama’s ability to dominate near the rim despite his current shooting struggles. He has scored at least 36 points in three of his last four games. He has also recorded five or more blocks in four different contests this season. His three-point shooting percentage stands at 24%, while his mid-range shooting is 11 for 36.
The team’s next scheduled game will determine if the momentum continues. The Spurs will look to extend their winning streak as they move further into the regular season. Wembanyama’s ability to balance his perimeter shooting with his interior dominance will be a key factor in their upcoming schedule.
