Saul Alvarez enters the ring in Saudi Arabia on Saturday as the challenger, a rare position for the 36-year-old fighter. He faces Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title in his first bout since September 2025. The matchup pits a veteran trying to recover from a career-defining loss against an undefeated opponent who has never faced a top-tier competitor of Alvarez's caliber.
The stakes were established in September 2025 when Alvarez lost a clear decision to Terence Crawford. That fight marked the most humbling defeat of Alvarez's professional career. Crawford, moving up in weight, used superior skills to disrupt Alvarez's rhythm and land the decisive punches. The loss validated long-standing doubts about Alvarez's age and durability, as he had not recorded a stoppage victory since 2021.
Alvarez addressed those concerns during his training camp in Spain. He stated that he prepared well for the Crawford fight but his mind was not focused during fight week. He plans to use that experience as a lesson while looking forward to the Mbilli bout. Alvarez believes Mbilli's specific style is well-suited for his own fighting abilities.
Mbilli, who holds a 29-0-1 professional record with 24 knockouts, was promoted from interim to full champion after Crawford retired. He won the interim belt with a first-round knockout of Maciej Sulecki, his second first-round stoppage in three fights. His first defense against Lester Martinez ended in a draw, a result that highlighted Mbilli's tendency to fatigue in later rounds despite early offensive pressure.
At the final press conference, Mbilli expressed his intent to surprise the boxing world. He said he respects Alvarez but expects a different outcome on Saturday. He claimed the fight would feature big surprises for viewers.
DraftKings odds list Alvarez as a -330 favorite to win the WBC super middleweight title. The undercard features Jaime Munguia fighting Nikita Zon, with Munguia listed at -1800. Rafael Espinoza defends his WBO featherweight title against Ricardo Blandon, with Espinoza at -3000. David Picasso faces Carl Jammes Martin in a featherweight bout, with Picasso at -700. Reito Tsutsumi and Raymundo Rojas Garcia round out the card in the junior lightweight division.
Analytical projections favor Alvarez to win by unanimous decision. Mbilli lacks defensive depth and has shown fatigue in extended fights, having only one 12-round bout on his record. Alvarez is expected to use his boxing intelligence and defensive skills to control the pace. The outcome will determine if Alvarez can regain his status as a world champion or if his era of dominance has ended.
