Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or on Monday, becoming the first English player to claim the award since 2001. The ceremony took place at the London Palladium, where hundreds of fans gathered outside to watch the 33-year-old lift the silver trophy. Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich, kissed the award before raising it above his head in front of a cheering crowd.

The victory marks the end of a long wait for English football, a drought that lasted 25 years. Kane’s path to the prize was not defined by early stardom. Instead, he spent his youth navigating a series of setbacks and loan moves that delayed his rise. He joined the Arsenal academy at age eight but was released after one season. Liam Brady, the academy director at the time, described the young forward as chubby and not very athletic. Arsene Wenger, who managed Arsenal for more than two decades, later expressed surprise at the decision to drop Kane.

Kane moved to Tottenham Hotspur at age 13, where he was labeled the runt of the litter by academy director John McDermott. McDermott noted that Kane was 30 percent slower than the rest of his group. The forward endured loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Leicester City, and Norwich City before establishing himself at Tottenham. There was a two-year gap between his first senior goal in 2011 and his next in 2013. Despite scoring 280 goals in more than 430 appearances for the club, Kane left without a major team trophy.

Kane waited until he was 31 to win his first silverware, securing the 2024-25 Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich. He has added four more club trophies since that season, including another league title and the German Cup. His individual statistics have continued to grow. He is England’s record scorer with 91 international goals and has 213 Premier League goals to his name. Last month, he became the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, achieving the milestone in his 98th league appearance for Bayern.

In a season where he scored 73 goals across club and country, Kane matched the output of top global stars. This total is the highest by a footballer since Lionel Messi scored 82 goals in the 2011-12 season. Kane described his journey as a battle against his own mind, noting that he had to show self-belief and determination to keep improving. He told DAZN that he was never viewed as a superstar like some of the current players, but his consistent performance silenced the doubt.

The award solidifies his status as one of the best English players of his generation. Unlike his peers who won the World Cup as teenagers, Kane reached his peak at 33. His performance in the final month of the qualifying period was decisive, as he outpaced rivals who had dominated headlines earlier in the year. The trophy completes a career arc that began with a release from a major academy and ended with global individual recognition.
