Abdul El-Sayed has secured the U.S. Senate seat for Michigan, according to an Associated Press race call. The result marks a shift in the state's congressional delegation and confirms the victory of a candidate who campaigned on cost-of-living concerns and healthcare reform.

El-Sayed defeated former Republican Representative Mike Rogers in a contest that drew national attention as a test for progressive candidates in the Midwest. The 42-year-old winner is set to become the first Muslim American to hold a Senate seat. He previously served as the public health official for Wayne County and the city of Detroit.

During the general election, El-Sayed focused his message on single-payer healthcare and limiting corporate influence in politics. He attracted support from young and infrequent voters while maintaining a distinction from more radical democratic socialist candidates who ran in primaries earlier in the year. Despite backing from prominent left-wing figures, El-Sayed described himself as a centrist rather than a democratic socialist.

The path to the general election included a tight primary race against Representative Haley Stevens. El-Sayed defeated Stevens by approximately one percentage point, even with the endorsement of Governor Gretchen Whitmer and retiring Senator Gary Peters for Stevens. In the final days of the general election, Stevens reversed her earlier stance and endorsed Rogers, a move that reflected the challenges in unifying the Democratic coalition in the state.

Rogers, who lost a Senate bid in 2024, received an early endorsement from President Donald Trump. The former representative embraced some of the president's claims regarding election fraud, a position he had previously criticized after the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. As the election neared, Rogers attempted to distance himself from certain presidential policies, including the war in Iran, while El-Sayed accused his opponents of using Islamophobic rhetoric.

El-Sayed's campaign was not without controversy. His positions on Israel drew criticism from some Jewish voters, particularly following comments made after a truck-ramming attack at a synagogue preschool in metro Detroit. He later issued an apology for those remarks. His campaign also included appearances with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker during the primary season, a choice that generated debate within the party.

With the win, El-Sayed joins the Senate as Democrats consider their direction after two years out of power. His election positions him as a prominent voice within the party, a role he is expected to leverage given Michigan's importance in the 2028 presidential nominating process.
