One person died and three others were injured after a shooting broke out at a youth football championship in Madison, Illinois, on Sunday night. The incident took place at Madison Senior High School around 9:50 p.m. The game was not hosted by the school but used its facilities for a community event.
Medical personnel transported the three surviving victims to area hospitals for treatment. The fourth victim died at the scene. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is currently leading the investigation. Investigators are actively seeking witnesses and anyone with information about the events surrounding the shooting.
Lt. Andrew Pierson, the public information officer for the Major Case Squad, urged the public to share any details. “Someone in that crowd saw something, recorded something, or has heard something since. We are asking those people to come forward,” Pierson said. He added that “a single photo, a short video, or one detail you think is insignificant may be exactly what moves this investigation forward.”
The Madison School District canceled classes for Monday. Normal operations will resume on Wednesday. In a statement, the district said it “is deeply saddened by the shooting.” Officials noted that while the district did not organize or sponsor the game, “this violence affects our entire school community.” The district plans to provide counseling and support services to students and staff during the interim.
