Lionsgate has locked in the initial schedule for the world premiere of the stage adaptation of Freida McFadden’s novel, The Housemaid. The production is slated to open at London’s Richmond Theatre on September 14, 2027. It will then tour the United Kingdom, concluding its run on April 29, 2028. No decision has been made regarding a potential North American tour.
Bekah Brunstetter, a Tony Award nominee, is writing the script for the play. Matthew Dunster, an Olivier Award nominee, will direct. The announcement marks the first concrete step in bringing the bestselling thriller to the theater after its screen debut.
The film adaptation, which starred Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney, opened in theaters in December 2025. Following its box office performance, Lionsgate confirmed that a sequel based on McFadden’s book, The Housemaid’s Secret, is in production. That film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate’s president of Global Products & Experiences, commented on the franchise's expansion. "With the stage play debuting next year and our sequel film in production, the momentum behind The Housemaid franchise continues to grow," Brown said in a press release.
The story follows Millie, a convicted felon who accepts a position as a housekeeper for the wealthy Nina Winchester. Millie quickly finds herself drawn to Nina’s husband, Andrew. The plot intensifies when Millie discovers that both members of the Winchester couple are hiding dark secrets, leading to chaos and violence.
